Two pro-Brexit officials, including the most senior official responsible for handling Britain’s departure from the European Union, resigned Sunday amid tensions with Prime Minister Theresa May, according to BBC News and The Guardian. Both David Davis, Brexit secretary, and Steve Baker, Brexit Department minister, will be leaving May’s government. The Independent previously reported that May had clashed often with pro-Brexit advocates over the degree to which Britain should separate from the EU, with May pursuing a “soft” approach and others backing a distinct separation. BBC notes that after May secured Cabinet support for her plan, Davis decided to resign, and Baker quickly followed. Fellow pro-Brexit officials hailed their decisions; one Parliament member told BBC that Davis had “done the right thing” and added that “The PM’s proposals for a Brexit in name only are not acceptable.” May will present her proposal to the House of Commons and Tory MPs this Monday.
